pacific heights contemporary italianate
Spearman Spaces was hired to breathe warmth and character into this circa-1900 Italianate home that was previously renovated with an expansive open floor plan, chef-style kitchens, European oak floors and exquisite indoor/outdoor living.
Our goal was to reintroduce soul into the space—bridging the home’s historic exterior architecture with a more contemporary interior language. We layered texture and tone through moody wallcoverings, custom wood built-ins, sculptural lighting, and richly tactile bedding. The result is a refined yet welcoming home that honors its past while embracing modern-day comfort and quiet luxury.
DESIGN ELEMENTS
In the reimagining of this circa-1900 Italianate home, the design narrative hinges on a deliberate dialogue between historic architectural gravity and contemporary interior warmth. Where an expansive, modern renovation left the space feeling austere, cohesion was achieved through an international tapestry of artisanal craft. Visual rhythm is driven by the artful tension of global materials: pairing the quiet depth of Dutch taupe wool wallpaper with bespoke warm wood built-ins, and balancing a London-designed abaca fiber pendant against the geometric discipline of an Indian-woven Bauhaus rug. Rather than relying on simple minimalism, warmth is cultivated through tactile depth using layered Belgian and French linens, hand-sculpted Brooklyn ceramics, and locally refurbished timber to create an environment that feels simultaneously historic, grounded, and unmistakably refined.
